Problems with Afilias on .IN Launch

In response to an inquiry from James Khan (copied to myself and to Richard Henderson), the president of Directi writes:

DirectI have been wanting to launch Live Registrations since the time we finished our pre-registrations, which is about 30 mins after the registry started.

However, we have been unable to do so as the subnet of the servers on which our domain management system is hosted is not yet added by Afilias (the .IN Registry).

We were told by the registry technical support that this subnet would be added in 2-3 hours. However, we have a new update from them and they have said that they will take 24-48 hours to add the subnet as their customer affairs desk is currently closed. i believe everyone is stressed out even at the registry since the last 48 hours have been hard work for everyone to meet launch deadlines. We have posted this same info at

We will start live registrations as soon as the registry completes our request for adding the subnet - until then our live registration systems cannot connect to the registry.
We had a very good automated process for all pre-registration applications that were submitted through us. We cant launch live registrations cause our subnets are not in the registry. Our preregistrations servers can connect to the registry - though we cant use these as our pre-registration servers are in India, 'cause we wanted them to be closest to the registry in order to ensure that customers who have applied to DirectI have a high probability of getting the domain names that they have applied for.

The pre-registration system does not have anything like check availablity , whois etc that is required for live registration. Our Live Registration system is common for all TLDs - i.e. .com / .net / .org / .info / us / .in / etc. These servers are in the US. You can verify this by checking the IP of our live registration system - We are waiting for the registry to add our subnet - we can launch live registrations in a very short time after this subnet is added.I hope that gives you some more clarity on the current situation.

We have just spoken to the registry 10 minutes ago. They have said that their operations staff which adds these subnets has just come in and they will process requests in the order in which they came in. However, they have not given us any timeframe for completing this as they themselves are bogged down with a lot of requests. I guess the primary issue was very small deadlines for launching everything for all registries and registrars. DirectI still has all software ready for going live as .IN is very similar to other TLDs that use EPP, but the newer .IN registrars cant be expected to complete writing the whole registration system in such short time frames. Do feel free to get in touch with me in case you need any further clarifications.

Warm Regards
